Xu Zhen: In Just A Blink of an Eye
by Jalyn Eaton
The Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art has acquired Chinese artist Xu Zhen’s performance piece entitled In Just a Blink of an Eye. The act features a group of performers levitating in mid-air as if frozen in space and time. MOCA’s acquisition of Xu Zhen’s piece is a sign of the museum’s new dedication to collecting performance art.
The work presents the human body as a material that tests the limits of physical and cognitive possibilities. As the audience waits for a movement to be made, they themselves become suspended in the time vacuum that is In the Blink of an Eye.
Xu Zhen: In Just a Blink of an Eye will be on view at MOCA’s Grand Avenue location every Saturday and Sunday from July 27th to September 1st.
