Our Monday Morning Reminiscence of the weekend past

Singer-songwriter Julia Jacklin grew up in the shadow of Australia’s Blue Mountains before moving to the Sydney area. After toiling for a while in an unfulfilling factory job, she liberated herself to pursue music full-time, which resulted in the release of her critically-acclaimed debut album Don’t Let the Kids Win.

Jacklin writes music that feels immediately timeless—it’s not difficult to imagine both your cool friends and your grandparents slow-dancing to her songs. At center stage is Jacklin’s mournfully emotive voice, which, when paired with clean, unadorned production, creates a sense of lonely immediacy that makes the listener feel like its just her and them. When that voice is paired with her signature slow-swaying shuffle rhythms and softly-strummed guitar, she conjures an atmosphere akin in its dreamy ethereality to a stage show in a David Lynch film. It’s sad, honest, and vivid songwriting, the kind that never goes out of style.

We caught up with Julia as she kicked off her first North American tour since the release of Don’t Let The Kids Win. She will be headlining a handful of shows up and down the west coast before setting off on an extensive cross-country tour supporting Andy Shauf.

Played the Bootleg in LA. Ran into an old friend of mine, the wonderful singer from New Zealand, Marlon Williams. The first tour I ever did was with him.

Really enjoyed the wooden floors of our green room in San Francisco. Good for sliding and dancing.

Getting out of the tour van for a real dose of perspective, realising how insignificant I am in the grand scheme of the natural world.

Ignoring all that by looking at my phone whilst beautiful Northern Californian wilderness races by outside my window.

Incredible colour scheme in road side motel. Wish I could make a music video here or at least be better at photography.

Ate Chowder for the first time, was damn good. Apparently you can see whales on a good day. Was getting pelted by rain at this moment.
