Skylar Stecker | New Single "You"
by Madison Douglas
Skylar Stecker releases her new single “YOU” today, June 11th, with an accompanying music video. From performing on the Today Show to climbing the Billboard dance charts, the young star has no intention of slowing down. In her new single, she reflects on the self-doubt that can come with being in a serious relationship. Stecker sat down with Flaunt to discuss her new single, her music influences, and what her fans can look forward to in the future.
When did you know that you wanted to pursue a career in the music industry?
When I was 9 years old I sang in a school talent show and instantly fell in love with performing! From that day on it's been full speed ahead, creating and continuing to grow as an artist.
Can you tell me about what inspired your song “You”?
"YOU," I wrote to reflect how a person feels when in a serious relationship and maybe it's not going well, so you start to question and blame yourself. Then in retrospect, it hits you that the real problem was never you, but them!
What inspired the video?
The song has a vibe that I wanted people to feel the first moment they heard it. So I figured the best way to do that was by creating a story through dance.
Tell us about the director and why you chose them?
The director is Daniel Carberry and he is an incredible director as well an equally amazing person! I have used him for a lot of my videos in the past, as well as upcoming projects. He helps me tell stories by creating moments in my videos that bring the music to life.
What is your dream music collaboration?
I gotta go with Bruno Mars and Beyonce! They are the first two artists I saw live and they set the bar high!
How would you describe your sound?
My sound has evolved through the years but I have always leaned towards R&B naturally but still like to keep a bit of pop structure.
Who are some of your music influences?
The list is long but to name a few...Bruno, Beyonce, Rhianna, Mariah Carey, Alicia Keys, Christina A, etc.
What are you most excited about for the future?
I am excited to keep making and releasing music, collaborating, and pushing myself to continue to grow and hopefully be touring again soon
