Flaunt Premiere | Ryahn "Sad Boy"
by Morgan Vickery
Family is what makes our past and determines our future, and the NYC-based singer Ryahn knows this like nobody else. Growing up in the family of rule-breakers in Florida, the R&B songstress has learned that with resilience and a strong sense of self, no obstacle is impossible to overcome. She got started by teaching herself how to play the ukulele and guitar, watching how-to videos on YouTube and writing songs in her bedroom. Her father's passing prompted Ryahn to start sharing her music publicly: she put her first single ‘Baby Boy’ up on Soundcloud in 2015, garnering over half a million streams. Using family history to map out her music career, Ryahn crafts grungy yet soulful tunes; the burgeoning singer/guitarist is only 21 years old and full of potential.
Today, we premiere ‘Sad Boy,’ the second single from Ryahn’s upcoming debut EP Light Blue. The languid drums, melancholy guitar, and luminous vocals tug hard on a wide range emotions, leaving no listener uninvolved. Here is what the author herself has to say about the song:
"'Sad Boy' is about the delicate nature of life and the people we cherish. There's an intense pain you undergo in the realization that your love, along with everything else you have ever known won't last no matter what you do. Still, I rather live with the pain of knowing my impermanence than to have never experienced the beauty of love."
