DJ duo and LA cool girls pläygirl (Sophia Alvarez and Sunnaya Nash) are moving and shaking, much like our asses when they play not one, but two Azealia Banks songs within 10 minutes of each other in the same set. The two met up with Mark Hunter AKA The Cobrasnake for a perfect, photo-debaucherous NYC pilgrimage and had a chat with fellow girl-who-plays and How to Murder Your Life author Cat Marnell, to answer the question in pläygirl’s comment section and everyone’s minds: who and what is pläygirl?

What does “pläygirl” mean?

Sophia & Sunnaya: The girls are playing.

Where are you girls from?

Sophia: All over California with a peppering of random southwestern towns.

Sunnaya: North County, San Diego, and the IE.

Sophia & Sunnaya: At our core, we’re real California girls. As if you couldn’t tell.

What’s the story of pläygirl?

Sunnaya: Sophia was reading The Wall Street Journal one day and came across an article I was quoted in regarding Mark Zuckerberg and his involvement in XCheck—a security startup for the 1%. Shortly after, we met at an XCheck-sponsored event on [redacted] Island. Our mutual friend Gregg Araki introduced us. For reasons unclear to us, we both shared a hallucination of people chanting “pläygirl! pläygirl!” immediately after our handshake. After said happening, we flew back to LA on the same Gulfstream. We knew exactly what we had to do.

How long have you been DJing?

Sunnaya: 19 years.

Sophia: Def like 1 month.

How long have you been friends with The Cobrasnake?

Sophia and Sunnaya: Near the beginning of the year, we found ourselves banned from every douchey WeHo disco bar that wouldn’t let two girls with no experience DJ. Every single one. Then we DM’d Mark. The rest is probably on his website.

What’s the best party you’ve ever played?

Sophia & Sunnaya: Def our own parties thrown at [redacted].

Sophia wears talent’s own top, tights, and heels.

What’s the worst party you’ve ever played?

Sunnaya: I took an edible before we went on and I forgot what all of the buttons did.

Sophia: Same, that night was such a drag. This may have been one of the first WeHo venues to ban us. It wasn’t due to not knowing what the buttons did, but not playing cliché top 40 hits.

Which one of you is the alpha? Which one is the beta? Why?

Sophia & Sunnaya: Not sure, but we can assure you that the guy who ghost DJs for us is def an alpha.

What’s your favorite drug?

Sunnaya: Penicillin.

Sophia: The free yet unenjoyable ones, obvi.

What’s your favorite brand?

Sunnaya: I love Soylent.

Sophia: No comment.

What’s your favorite movie?

Sophia: I want to give an indulgently stupid answer—I’ll refrain. Maybe it’s The Double Life of Véronique, maybe it changes by the end of the week.

Sunnaya: Harold and Maude.

Sunnaya: “Paper Gangsta” by Lady Gaga.

Sophia: I literally do not listen to music.

Who’s your favorite billionaire?

Sophia: Stewart Rahr. I can’t comment on his personal views or accolades because I don’t care. He’s a personal fav due to his weekly email blasts in which he updates a long list of elites, journalists, and celebrity-types on his personal life and exploits—photos included. Something I’d love to either rip off or get added to. Stew, please.
