“Making it look easy” is what many artists strive for. From Anna Pavlova to Picasso, much of the intrigue around these people has to do with how they so effortlessly excel at their craft. Colin Chillag, though, offers no illusions of ease. His pieces appear half-finished—a painstaking and jarring collage of the abstract over the top of a hyper realistic portrait. His next solo show, “Anti Realism” will be held at 101/EXHIBIT in L.A. from February 28—April 18.

John Malkovich's art/self are often conflated, and his upcoming show is no exception. The photography exhibition is titled “Malkovich Malkovich, Malkovich, Malkovich: Homage to Photographic Masters,” and in it Malkatraz assumes the role of different canonical photographic subjects. Being John Malkovich has never been so confusing. Currently shown at the Fahey/Klein Gallery in L.A.

It’s a hard knock life, being in the music industry. Tomorrow night, HRLA in collaboration with filmmakers Ian Randolph and Solomon Gross will screen “Background Music,” a mockumentary short about one man’s journey as a rap hype man. The music won’t just be on the screen, either; burgeoning L.A. talents such as Verbs, Ryder Bach, and Potion will perform before and after the screening. Doors open at 9pm, $5 entrance fee.

Turns out the boozy asshole portrayed in “Pollock” might not have been as careless as we all supposed. According to an in-depth study of “Alchemy,” a 1947 painting that was recently returned to the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, Pollock actually had a planned structure for his painting. Contrary to the popular image of him throwing paint at a canvas in between taking shots of cheap bourbon, the reality seems to be that he was designing a grid structure for his pieces (in between taking shots of cheap bourbon, no doubt). “Alchemy” is on display in Venice alongside videos and installations detailing the study of the painting and the restoration process. Through April 6th.

Jack White’s latest music video “Black Bat Licorice” is a three-music-videos-in-one bonanza, with a neat little interactive twist that allows the viewer to control them. If watching an animated version of Jack White cut off his tongue with an exacto knife just isn’t rock-and-roll enough for you, then try holding down either the B or 3 keys for some slow motion head banging or middle aged men in George Washington masks. The interactive video will make you want to dance with bats under a dark sky, and leave you wondering whether black bat licorice is organic, and if so, what aisle can we find it on?

So many feels! Between Flaunt favorite Jeanette Hayes, Adam Levett, and India Meneuz, there won’t be a cold (hearted) person left after the Feelings Film Festival this Monday in New York City. Marketed as a collaboration between Canada’s “most formidable frenemies,” Chloe Wise and Adam Levett, the festival will showcase films by 20 different artists. Held Monday, February 23rd at the Anthology Film Archives, the festival will start at 7p.m.
