No More I Love Ewes
by flaunt
We like riddles wrapped in enigmas, wrapped in puzzles, wrapped in Babushka dolls. Especially if one of them’s The Dude. Crazy 4 Cult is an exhibition that allows artists to celebrate their favorite cult films. This year’s collection includes tributes to The Big Lebowski, The NeverEnding Story, and Pan's Labyrinth. It starts tonight at Gallery 1988 (West) in Los Angeles and runs until the new year.
Shlohmo
For all of the sonic monks out there who demand their beats zen and broken, Shlohmo has just dropped a new track Emerge From Smoke. It’s the perfect number for dancing up the shimmering sunrise as it ascends over a high Arizona mesa, and as the world disassembles into a perfectly aligned whole. Or so we imagine.
FR-EE
A deep bow and sincere tip of the hat to FR-EE architects who unveiled their design for the new Latin American Art Museum in Miami during Art Basel. The project is the brainchild of art collector Gary Nader and will house his extensive collection of Latin American art. It has lines that George Jetson would be at home in and its style is just so Miami. The museum is set to open in 2016.
Samuel Beckett
For those who prefer that their theatre characters reside in trash cans, a definitive collection of poems by the truly legendary absurdist playwright (and Nobel Laureate) Samuel Beckett has been released in hardcover. The Collected Poems of Samuel Beckett will be a wonderful stocking stuffer for any relative who’s still waiting... Waiting for what? Who’s waiting… Waiting for... Ahh, forget it.
James Turrell
‘Light is not so much something that reveals, as it is itself revelation… We eat light, drink it in through our skins.’ Or so James Turrell tells us – clearly this is not your grandfather’s solarium. The NGA in Australia is presenting a major retrospective of the famed Californian artist’s work. It runs from tomorrow until June 8th.
Clashist
"To clash is to make two things come together unexpectedly in a beautifully opposing form." Or that’s according to Heather Lipner, the founder of Clashist (it also sounds like a competent [if moderately self-aggrandizing] description of our I Love Ewes). The iconoclastic clothier mashes images of pop-culture luminaries like James Franco and Lena Dunham then prints them onto sweatshirts, tee-shirts, leggings, socks, and one piece bathing suits. Pure perfection for those tricky Eastside warehouse fashion parties, where kitsch is the new chic, but god, whatever you do don’t do chic, because that was so 2014.
Egon Schiele
The glorious expressionist Egon Schiele’s truly tangled twistings of the human form are on display at the Courtauld Gallery in London until January 18th. The Austrian artist was the protégé of Gustav Klimt, and died far too soon at the age of 28 in the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic that claimed 20 million lives. He was famous for insisting that "erotic works of art are also sacred,” and pushed the boundaries of self-expression, procreation, sexuality, eroticism and mortality. We love a bad boy.
This Is Ground
Do Wes Anderson films elicit heavy sighs from between your lips and a wistful longing that if only, if only my life could look like that… Are you also a little OCD? Then This Is Ground has the collection for you. Their highly covetable organizational equipment will make you feel like you're the lovechild of Margot Tenenbaum and Scout Master Ward.
Em Trânsito
Returning again to Miami, where Flaunt so recently tripped, re-tripped and tripped again over the light fantastic at Art Basel. ESPASSO gallery has an exhibit celebrating modern contemporary Brazilian design. Featured delights include this sumptuous Grude Armchair by Fernando Mendes and Julia Krantz, made of Cedro naval wood and leather. The exhibition ‘Em Trânsito’ runs until January 4th at the Shore Club - a venue soon to be renovated by the über-talented Brazilian architect Isay Weinfeld.
Full Moon Motorcycle
In a shout-out to some truly unusual design, the Full Moon motorcycle by Akrapovic and Dreamachine Motorcycles was unveiled last week at the Bad Salzuflen Custombike show in Germany. The aspiring engineer in Flaunt is moderately sceptical of its cornering abilities, but what’s more important? The risk of a catastrophic wipe-out as you turn onto the Champs-Élysées, or looking as fly as Steve McQueen on a hover-bike?
Elvis Presley
Aside from his questionable attitude towards hound dogs (come on Elvis, slaughtering rabbits should not be the key criteria for canine companionship!) The King of Graceland should rightly be celebrated as one of the greatest 20th century icons of music, style, and excess. Elvis at The O2: The Exhibition Of His Life, Direct From Graceland runs until August in London, and features over 300 of his artifacts and belongings.
Nouvelles Expériences en Art et Technologie (NEAT)
Tonight, in serendipitous timing for the release of our upcoming Frankenstein (Art & Technology) Issue, the Fondation Cartier pour l’Art Contemporain is presenting Nouvelles Expériences en Art et Technologie (NEAT) – a night of art and performance that will unveil projects created by 9 artists during their residencies at the Google Cultural Institute Lab. The artists were assembled by 89Plus – a brain child of Simon Castets and Hans Ulrich Obrist that assembles and nurtures artists born during or since 1989. It’s on tonight from nine until midnight.
Martijn van Strien
Your body is a palette. And every day you walk out the door is another day to tell the world who you are. Martijn van Strien wants to help you get your message across with his capsule collection made up of 3 dystopian pieces sold exclusively at New York gallery/concept store Chamber, curated by Studio Job. His work is characterized by geometric forms, minimalism and black and white. It should definitely be the garment of choice for your next 2am visit to the Hollywood In-N-Out.
