No More I Love Ewes

Hello Darling, It's Me, Your Weekly Revelations.

NO ONE UNDERSTANDING YOU DOESN’T MAKE YOU AN ARTIST

For the next five weeks, Renaissance art enthusiasts in Manhattan will have the opportunity to see rare Donatello sculptures at the Museum of Biblical Art, after which, MOBIA will shut it’s doors permanently, telling the sad tale once again that the lifespan of a museum is often only slightly better than that of your average restaurant. The museum was one of the first of its kind to veer from “an undeniable reluctance to interpret the religious component of art,” in the words of founding director Ena Heller. It informed viewers as to each piece’s of art’s spiritual inspiration, its ritual use, and where it fit into popular belief or religious politics. SCULPTURE IN THE AGE OF DONATELLO runs through June 14th.

BY ALL MEANS, MOVE AT A GLACIAL PACE

Who said bad bitches can’t be funny, too? Anna Wintour has always been the queen of daring fashion moves, and it turns out she’s also the queen/dictator of comedy. In a five minute sketch on NBC’s Late Night With Seth Myers, Wintour plays herself, as the secret brains behind every major comedy show in the last forty years. Myers claims that it was Wintour who directed Animal House, and that as soon as she became the executive producer of Late Night all of the employees started wearing ball gowns and tuxedos. Watch the hilarious skit here.

I GOT POLISHED CRIBS ALL IN MY NAME

The collaboration we’ve all been waiting for: Prada, Wes Anderson, and Roman Polanski. The Fondazione Prada is expanding its new permanent headquarters in Milan. Developed by architecture firm OMA and led by Rem Koolhaas, the giant spectacle houses a bar designed by Wes Anderson, a space to show the screening of a new Roman Polanski film, and permanent artwork by Robert Gober. Having been in the making for seven years, it finally opens its doors to the public tomorrow.

TWO DROPS, NO MILEAGE

“Hippies” just got a lot happier. Earlier this week, Miley Cyrus launched her nonprofit, The Happy Hippie Foundation, which aims to “rally young people to fight injustice facing homeless youth, LGBT youth and other vulnerable populations.” To kick it off, Miley performed a duet with Joan Jett as part of “Backyard Sessions”–an inaugural series of musical collabs to be performed and recorded in Miley’s own backyard. You can donate and watch their performance to Jett’s song, Different, here.

BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING MIU

The universe has a funny way of touching those we thought were untouchable. Nymphomaniac star and Shia Labeouf bae, Mia Goth, is the most recent victim of the universe. Or, to be more specific, of the Advertising Standards Agency. Her Miu Miu advertisement, which ran in Vogue, was pulled for its “irresponsible” content because the narcs claimed that the S/S '15 campaign sexualized a model who appeared to be underage-under 16, specifically-despite the fact that Goth is 22.

DO YOU HAVE ANY HEADS FOR ME TODAY?

“If you can’t share, we will have to take it away,” declared four-year-old Myla Hendricks to her mother. Hesitant, artist, Mica Hendricks had no choice but to give in to her daughter and let her draw alongside her. Their collaboration has resulted in an entire collection of unexpected portraits with mismatching bodies and heads. The mother-daughter team’s creations are a perfect blend of childish imagination and adult expertise. You can view and buy the works at busymockingbird.com.

JUST PLEASE DON’T TOUCH ME

For those of us who spill spaghetti or coffee every single time we wear a white shirt, salvation is here. Elizabeth & Clarke has developed a new line of affordable "unstainable" tops. Made from tiny fibers that are 100,000 times smaller than a grain of sand, the tops are designed to repel all water-based or oil-based liquids. The clothing line premieres next week.

SINCE WHEN DO WE HAVE AN INTERN PROGRAM

As if Silicon Valley needed more exposure, we’re approaching the first ever Silicon Valley Fashion Week. The founder and CEO of Betabrand, Chris Lindland, created SVFW to showcase the merging of fashion and technology. Each of the three nights of the show are themed, and the first one will center on movement and lighting. Adding insult to injury, instead of models, the “clothing” will be worn by drones, leaving us wondering if there is any job that the tech industry will not try to outsource. The sold out fashion week will take place May 12 through 14 in San Francisco.

MOSEY ON DOWN

Ed Moses became widely known in the Los Angeles art scene in the 60s and 70s for his sizeable floral graphite drawings and geometric grids.  Now, thanks to an upcoming retrospective at LACMA entitled ED MOSES: DRAWINGS FROM THE 1960S AND 70S, the artist’s fans will get a rare glimpse of his drawings. This is the first time they have been displayed in a museum setting since 1976, and viewers can expect to see drawings from the artist’s holdings and private collections. The exhibition will be on view May 10 through August 2.

MAKE YOU FEEL SOME TYPE OF WAY

Net-a-Porter, the online luxury fashion retailer, has set its sights on a new image sharing-shopping-social network (say that five times fast). The Net Set will operate via an image recognition software that finds the closest matches to the items and provides links to buy the items from their web store. So if you see someone with a garment you'd love to have? Snap a picture of it, then find it on Net-a-Porter. The invite-only beta version drops May 13th; no word as to a general release just yet, but it sounds like the wait may be worth it.

PHALLUS PALACE

Already garnering undeniably coquettish commentary from reporters, English artist Sarah Lucas has unveiled her exhibition at the British Pavilion of the 2015 Venice Biennale. The piece is something of a mélange of traditional French dessert, really big dicks, and anal smoke absorption. The I SCREAM DADDIO installation begins with a 9-foot schlong that greets visitors, before they move on to the crème brûlée context where demi-mannequins pose provocatively with cigarettes protruding from their various orifices. The exhibition aims to "confront big themes with distinctive wit" (genitalia being a typical YBA shock tactic) and will be showing through November 22.

THE OEUVRE OF MY EYE

If you were wondering what all the truly discerning #ballers are up to lately, you might find them embroiled in a fervor of art appreciation at auction houses Sotheby’s and Christie’s. Spring sales started Tuesday, and a slew of pricey pieces have seen a change of ownership beginning with Van Gogh’s "L’Allee des Alyscamps," a piece allegedly painted a month before the painter notoriously cut off his ear. The painting sold for $66 million (it was valued at around $40 million), while the human-scale bronze sculpture, "Man Pointing," by Alberto Giacometti is set to fetch a record-breaking $130 million. Leonardo DiCaprio was spotted energetically bidding on a piece and then making out with an unidentified blonde.

EXCUSE ME

Brian Roettinger, the Los Angeles local hero and graphic designer who grew up out of the squelchy native punk scene, has created a series of work around the art of the announcement, suitable in this season of ultimate art show poster density. The show will open tonight at HVW8 Gallery in Los Angeles, and on May 16th at the gallery's Berlin outpost.
