NO PAPARAZZI PLEASE
If you thought that Lenny Kravitz couldn’t get any more retro, think again. The sex symbol/ rock icon is venturing into the photography world, opening up his first gallery show here in L.A. at The Leica Gallery. The photos are an intriguing spin on the paparazzi, in which Kravitz turns his camera onto his fans (stalkers) at the precise moment they are attempting to photograph him. The show runs through April 1st.
THERE’S A GIANT BOTTLE OF VODKA WHERE YOU USED TO BE
Turns out Madonna really is a rebel at heart. The pop star has refused to loan her Frida Kahlo painting, “My Birth,” (1932) to the The Detroit Institute of Arts. The museum is doing an exhibition centered around Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera’s time together in Detroit, and they were expecting to be loaned “My Birth” based on Madonna’s previous loan history with The Tate Modern. The painting is one of just five that Kahlo produced while in the motor city, and is an unfortunate hole in the exhibition.
ICE CREAM FOR BREAKFAST, LUNCH, AND DINNER
Gucci Mane’s 39-month slammer stay is proving productive. Earlier this month, he released a mixtape entitled Mr. Clean, the Middle Man, and now this week, he bowled us over with, not one, but three new albums released in one night, all while locked up. The three mixtapes, Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner are all available on iTunes today. Yum.
I DOES WHAT I WISH
Polish artist, Nawer, has moved from the streets to the walls with his latest exhibition, Colors in Shapesland. “The goal,” says the artist, “Is always to strive forward in an effort to connect painting with architecture.” This latest exhibition is comprised of a series of white backdrops with dramatic geometric lines and abstract shapes. It is showing in Tokyo at the Hidaro Zingaro Gallery.
SOMETIMES A CIGAR IS JUST A CIGAR
To showcase their Spring 2015 campaign, Proenza Schouler’s Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez released a suggestive short film, entitled Legs Are Not Doors in which some of fashion’s most prominent faces (Liv Tyler, Chloe Sevigny, Liya Kebede, Binx Walton and Fei Fei Sun, among others) give personal anecdotes that are snipped together in a confessional style to compose a story that may or may not be rated-R.
LOVE IS A LOSING GAME
The U.K. release date for the much anticipated Amy Winehouse documentary, aptly titled Amy, has been announced as July 3. The film, directed by BAFTA winner Asif Kabadia, is told in Amy’s own words and features unheard tracks and never-before-seen footage. Though the U.S. release date has yet to be announced, U.K. CEO and Chairman of Universal Music Group David Joseph says we can expect a heartfelt film about family, media, fame and addiction. STRIKE TWO
Mo'ne Davis, the Little League superstar pitcher who made baseball history last August continues to make a difference. The 13-year-old unveiled a sneaker line to help impoverished girls around the world. Working with the shoe company M4D3 and the "Because I am a Girl" initiative, a new line of Mo'ne-designed sneakers, complete with baseball-themed stitching, will soon be hitting the market.
MISCHIEVOUS BUT CALCULATED
Drake might’ve started at the bottom, but he’s definitely on top now. Sotheby’s is teaming up with Drake to musically curate a soundtrack for an exhibition of works by black American contemporary artists (among them, Kara Walker and Jean-Michel Basquiat). Drizzy selections can be heard at “listening stations” around the private art sale through Beats by Dre headphones.
CRUSH YOUR HEAD
Timeless comedy is a rarity, so how could we ever forget “The Kids In The Hall.” Tickets to see the cast of the show perform live at The Ace Hotel went on sale today at noon. The hit television show ran from the late ‘80s to the early ‘90s, and since then the cast has been doing solo and group comedy projects around the U.S. The show takes place on June 2nd. Tickets here.
PICS OR IT DIDN’T HAPPEN
Is the Internet really ruining art sales? This week, Sotheby’s launched their live streaming auctions on Ebay. The auction house is coming out of an abysmal sales year, and is clearly trying to rally for 2015. Articles and videos accompany every Sotheby’s Ebay auction, and Sotheby’s experts share tips and behind the scenes looks at artists and brands, trend reports, and gift guides. If anything can save them, it’d be this.
EVERYTHING IS ILLUMINATED
Artist Vicki DaSilva is shedding some much needed light on Syria’s ongoing plight. Pun intended. Since 2011, 83% of the country’s electricity has been cut off, which is why OxFam International enlisted the help of the light artist to boost awareness. Her commissioned work illuminates a transient yet frozen message to “act #withSyria.” You can watch her artistic process here and sign a petition calling world leaders to get Syria’s lights back on here.
SHINE ON YOU CRAZY DIAMOND
And the light shines in darkness, and we turn to the bright side, to C Finley and her vibrant, massive, unapologetically joyous paintings. Her upcoming solo show–her first in Los Angeles–titled The Divine Distractions, heavily references the iconic imagery of her homebase Rome, and will open tomorrow, March 21st, 7pm-10pm, at the recently-planted L.A. outpost of Brooklyn-based Superchief Gallery. Around the opening and throughout the duration of the show, The Divine Distractions will also feature performances by dancer-in-residence-extraordinaire A. Dola Baroni. The show will run through April 4th.
