"PISS + BLOOD & SPUNK" Exhibit at Tom of Finland Foundation
by Jessica Romoff
Question: Can a jar of piss be a self portrait? Or even further: Can a jar of piss be art? According to Ruben Esparza’s “Piss + Blood & Spunk” multimedia exhibit, it most definitely can. At the Tom Finland Foundation, Esparza fuses the creative minds of artists with his own knack for curating, to synergize cross-referential artworks. Be prepared for a visceral insight into the more gritty markers of the LGBTQ+ community of the 90s, from AIDS tropes, phallocentrism, and bodily fluids, revitalized to the contemporary Trumpian zeitgeist.
Besides Esparza’s self-portrait jar of piss, the exhibit features erotic queer polaroids, homoeroticized whimsical adorations of the penis, collage artworks taken from fast-disappearing porn magazines, and more! “Piss + Blood & Spunk” is a commentary heralded by hardcore queer obscenity from another time, brought back into this internet age.
The Tom Finland Foundation is a international hub of enlightenment celebrating the vast catalog of Tom of Finland and all forms of sex-positive art.
The exhibit opens this Saturday night, June 8, with a reception from 7 to 10 pm.
