Opening Ceremony | Year of Mexico Launch

by Hannah Jackson

Since there are no Olympic Games this year, Opening Ceremony has been handed the proverbial torch of honoring the Games’ celebratory vision of diversity. Though we’re still a year away from Tokyo 2020, Mexico is the star of 2019-2020 for the fashion brand. On July 24th, the Los Angeles store was adorned with garlands of brightly-colored papel picador, and the bar catered Mezcal-infused aguas fresca to celebrate the Year of Mexico.

Every year since its 2002 inception, Opening Ceremony has honed in on a “host” country, seeking to celebrate its unique culture and design. “We are so excited to celebrate Mexico as a country of focus at Opening Ceremony this year. We have always been fascinated by its cultures, food, arts, and design. Especially given the current political landscape, it seemed like perfect time to focus on and celebrate the beauty and diversity of this country. Providing a platform for young Mexican designers, artists, and artisans feels like the perfect way for us to do it authentically,” said Opening Ceremony founder Humberto Leon.

The collection features a range of designs and brands made exclusively for Opening Ceremony as well as its boutiques. A large team, including founders Leon and Carol Lim scoured bazaars and markets throughout Mexico City and Guadalajara to bring back the country’s finest fashions and goods.

Opening Ceremony is also partnering with the Mexican non-profit organization, Fondo Semillas—which partners with and supports women-led grassroots organizations—in celebration of the Year of Mexico.
