Weekend Recall: Elohim
by flaunt
There are few people who can emerge into a scene with the level of confidence that enigmatic electro-pop singer and producer Elohim https://www.instagram.com/elohim/ possesses; yet, when it does happen, it’s electrifying to watch. She has crafted a unique aesthetic that mixes sounds from industrial, pop, house, and dancehall, all warped through the cracked looking-glass of her experimental tendencies. Her mysterious and darkly cinematic videos only add to the appeal.
Elohim has been on a hot streak, much to the delight of her adoring fan-base: she released a self-titled EP last year through B3SCI Records, collaborated with the likes of Casey Veggies and Darnell Williams, and performed upon the stages at Coachella, Lightning in a Bottle, and Firefly - just to name a few.
Recently, you may have caught her mid-set at Lollapalooza. Perhaps, instead, you heard her latest single, “Sleepy Eyes,” a fluttery collaboration with LA-based producer Whethan. Maybe, even, you bought tickets to see her headline at New York City’s Mercury Lounge this Friday, or to witness her performing during her U.S. tour with Alison Wonderland this fall.
Whatever the case, it’s no stretch to say that Elohim reaches for the sky and settles among the cosmos as any bonafide starlet should.
She was also kind enough to walk us through her weekend back down on Earth - specifically, in Chicago for Lollapalooza:
10am: Walking into Lolla pre official gates opening. We walked by a long line of excited humans awaiting their weekend of music and love. This wonderful girl Elizabeth came running up to me "EL! i knew it was you from your boots!" (My hair is usually all over my face.) We hugged and it was such a special moment. I also loved her shirt a lot ;)
12pm: Pre-show is interesting for me. During that time, I generally don't like to speak. I am always concerned about people taking that as me being standoffish or unfriendly. However, what they don't know is that there is a lot going on in my brain at that time. I try to focus on myself and my emotions. I like to be alone and really find my zone and zen. I have to keep myself calm and not over stimulated. Sometimes the nerves are worse at certain shows and better at others.
1pm: This was my first time playing Lollapalooza. It was so exciting to see so many beautiful faces early on in the day. The response from the crowd was wonderful.
2pm: After my set, as I was sitting in my trailer getting my heart rate back to a normal speed, my lovely friends stopped by to say hi. Whethan and I just released a song together called "Sleepy Eyes". One of the best parts of playing festivals is running into friends. We all lead such crazy busy lives, it is nice to have a place where everyone comes together.
8pm: Minutes before the massive storm hit Chicago, we arrived at The Metro. Blink 182 fans were lined up down the street. We made our way into the venue said hi to everyone and I started my soundcheck.
10:30pm: I had the honor and pleasure of opening for blink 182 as my third show of the day. Usually you find a band like this headlining massive arenas but this was a special lolla after show. Metro chicago was completely packed out. I took the stage at 10:30 pm. It was such an amazing way to end the day. Chicago has very supportive, warm and welcoming people. Every show had such kind fun crowds.
When I am on stage nothing else matters. I am one with the music. It is one of the only times I don't feel anxiety.
