20 QUESTIONS WITH ELLIOT MOSS

by flaunt

Everything you ever wanted to know about the multi-instrumentalist but were afraid to ask

Elliot Moss – the multi-instrumentalist songwriter, producer, and visual artist from New York City – worked on his debut album Highspeeds since he was a sophomore in high school, playing, recording, and mixing all the tracks primarily by himself. After slowly releasing singles from the album, Moss released Highspeeds in 2015.

Since then, Moss has been hard at work in the studio. His next EP Boomerang is out April 28 on Sounds Expensive.

We caught up with Elliot to ask him 20 questions.

What did you eat for breakfast today?
Half of a banana. The other half fell on the floor and my dog ate it.

What was the last movie that made you cry?
Wall-E

Who do you admire?
I’m on a serious Bjork kick… and lately I’ve been watching anything with Richard Ayoade.

What’s a hidden talent you have?
I make a great chili.

What’s something you aren’t good at, but wish you were?
Cooking anything other than chili.

If you weren’t doing music, what would you be?
I’d try to work in visual effects. We used a really unique practical effect for my ‘Closedloop’ video… a super-bright LED light mounted to a drone. It stretched wild shadows all over different landscapes and objects.

What was the last time you got lost?
In Canada where our American GPS gets confused.

What did you do on your last day off?
Spent the day with my girlfriend in the city. There was a sign offering free food to anyone who could rap a Kanye verse, and she won us chips!

What’s your ideal vacation destination?
A city that I’ve never been to.

Do you have a pet?
Bentley, my dog! He’s gotten really funny with age – turning 10 soon.

Do you keep plants?
Many, I have a big palm thing sitting on my studio desk.

What was the last time you failed at something?
I write plenty of music that gets thrown away. But that’s learning.

What was the last thing you ate that made you say “Damn!”?
My chili.

What was the last thing you read?
Just finished Interviews with Francis Bacon by David Sylvester.

What was the last piece of art that you looked at?
Francis Bacon’s “Three Studies for Figures at the Base of a Crucifixion” (just now, when I went to double-check the author’s name).

What was the last concert you went to?
We were recently in Orlando, FL for tour… haven’t seen anything since I’ve gotten back. So, I guess it would technically be a guy playing a double-neck acoustic guitar and a didgeridoo at Disney Springs.

What was the last (piece of art/song/movie or TV show) you saw that made you jealous?
The last one? I suppose Black Mirror just makes you sit there wishing you thought of those things. It’s annoyingly great.

What is your guilty pleasure?
French fries at 3am.

What do you do to relax?
Read… play music… working on other people’s music is relaxing for me. Pressure’s off.

What do you do to get revved up?
Jumping jacks… and my drummer Devin has gotten me into all kinds of coffee.

What do you Flaunt?
My new EP, Boomerang! Really looking forward to this being out.

Boomerang is out April 28 on Sounds Expensive.
