Mckenna Grace | Accolades? They're the Real Deal
by Lauren Castro

Mckenna Grace, at only 15-years-old, has featured in over 30 projects, with titles including Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Fuller House, and I, Tonya. The rising star has cemented her place in New Hollywood, giving us a preview of what the next generation of talent has to offer.
Grace’s most notable role is that of the teenage wife of an insufferable commander in The Handmaid’s Tale via Hulu, for which she’s up for an Emmy. Grace demonstrates not only maturity but a dedication to her craft in a panoramic show known for its thematically deep and harsh tones. Outside of acting, the roller skating-loving performer isn’t afraid to be herself and can also sing as well as play the ukulele, often sharing her hobby with her friends on social media. Flaunt lobbed a few questions in the direction of Grace, who is currently filming for Disney’s upcoming coming-of-age adventure Crater, and she was gracious enough to answer us back.

Where do you hope to see change in the world?
I would like to see a kinder world. A world where we are kinder to each other and to ourselves. I think that we could somewhat be on a path towards there, but I also feel that social media can stunt that at times. I'd like to see a world where we are less reliant on the likes and comments of strangers, which is hard to say, considering the profession I've chosen for myself. It just seems like social media has such a huge influence over our lives, to the point where sometimes we can be more worried about what strangers think, instead of the people closest to us.
What is your most prized possession and why?
I'm not sure if I have a prized possession because I feel like it's kind of scary to have a material object that you put so much emotion into. I do get really connected to objects, like stuffed animals and plants and random things...but if I had to pick one thing, I guess it would be my stuffed seal DD. He's been in most every film and tv show I've ever been in and he was my moms when she was little, so he's pretty important to me.
What was the last cheesy thing you witnessed that made you cry?
I cry a lot, but I don't cry easily...if that makes sense. Like it takes a lot for me to cry watching a movie, which is strange, because I feel like a lot of the movies that I film, I usually have crying scenes. I don't know the last cheesy thing I cried to, but the last time I cried was watching Romeo and Juliet (the 1996 one)...but that is not cheesy at all...it's an absolute piece of art. I love it!
What about your off-camera personality do you feel is most often misunderstood?
I’m a really energetic and positive person, and I constantly try to bring that positivity into everything I do. If I think someone is cool or talented or beautiful, I tell them as much as I can. I want to make sure people feel important and loved, so I try to compliment and hug people as often as possible. Though people usually think I’m sarcastic or making fun of them, but I’m not. I am really never sarcastic when I’m telling someone how cool I think they are, I always mean it. I think so highly of my friends, so I try to make sure they know it. Another downside to this is some people can find it annoying, which is one of my worst fears. Or it’s just too much. That’s one of the worst feelings is when I think so highly of someone and want to let them know, but they just tell me I’m a bit too much. That I just need to chill out and stop worrying about other people… I honestly can’t help it.

Where do you go mentally, physically or otherwise that brings you solace?
Anywhere, as long as I have music. Music is really such a great escape from any sort of reality. I love small spaces, like a bathroom or a closet- as odd as that sounds. I also pray a lot.
What’s one of the biggest lessons you’ve learned throughout your time of acting?
What’s meant for you is meant for you, don’t try to force things and to be very grateful for what I have. I’ve spent countless hours crying over projects I didn’t get or thinking to myself ‘if I only would’ve done this better’...but I always kind of see why things work out, because this business moves very fast. If I would’ve got - ten one project, I wouldn’t haven’t gotten something else. I’m the type of person who is always wondering what is next, which can be a blessing, because I am really motivated, but it can be a curse too, because I worry about the future. I realized that in doing this, I sometimes would miss out on really feeling the joy of what I’m currently doing or the people I’m with. I feel like the experiences and people that are brought into my life are there for a reason, and I won’t have to beg or cry for something that is meant for me.
Describe a life experience that was very challenging, but made you stronger.
I was going to say Covid, but I want to be completely honest, it actually made me weaker. I feel like I'm truly still trying recover from it...but I do hope that in the end I will be stronger...just not yet, I still have a lot of work to do.
Ideal shoot location?
Tokoyo, Japan... my favorite place in the entire world!
Which meal or food do you find the most nostalgic and why?
Kid Cuisine freezer meals and YooHoo's because I loved them so much when I was little. There's not crazy story behind it or a specific memory, I just really loved when my Mom would buy me those when I was really little.
What excited you about the second half of 2021?
I was really excited because my projects that got delayed are finally being released. Handmaid's Tale is out and Ghostbuster's: Afterlife is coming out in November. I also knew I was going to be filming Crater for Disney Plus with a bunch of kids all summer, so I had that to look forward to. I was happy that the Covid restrictions were lifting and things feel more hopeful.
If you weren't acting, what would be your professional pursuit and why?
I would definitely do something creative in the realm of production- like directing, producing, writing, writing music, etc.
What do you wish you had more time to be doing?
I love rollerskating, so I wish I had more time to do that. I can roller skate while I'm filming a movie, but a lot of times the productions don't want me to so that I don't get hurt. I wish I had more time to read...I love reading so much. I also wish I had more time to do things in music. I've been writing and recording songs and spending time in the studio and I really love it.
If you could soundtrack a trip to the grocery store for a stylized short film, what's the song?
‘Small World’ by Jack Stauber. Just listen to the song and you'll get it, it's seriously one of my favorites. I listen to it all the time, it just makes me happy. I've always listened to his music and felt like the main character in a indie film.
