Matthew Brookes | Exploring the Californian Coast
by Sam Franzini
New York and Paris-based photographer, Matthew Brookes is gearing up to release his second monograph book, Into the Wild, an exploration of and homage to surf and van life on the Californian coast. The project follows a group of surfers as they make their way from Venice Beach up and down the coastline, living in vans and chasing the freedom and dreams California offers. The book combines the documentary-style photographs of the surfers and natures with interviews done by Zack Raffin, surf journalist from Stab Magazine.
Best known for his editorial projects, Brookes’ photography has been featured in GQ Style and Vogue. He published his first monograph, Les Danseurs, in 2015, documenting ballerinas from the Paris Opera.
Into the Wild will be published on May 24th.
