Hublot x Alexander Ovechkin | The Big Bang Unico Red Carbon Alexander Ovechkin

Alexander Ovechkin, ice hockey legend and team captain for The Washington Capitals, has partnered with luxury watchmaker Hublot to create a brilliant, authentic timepiece. The Big Bang Unico Red Carbon Alexander Ovechkin is a black ceramic watch with red flecks to pay homage to Ovechkin’s team as well as his Russian heritage. Ovechkin further personalized the watch by including his signature on the case back. Hublot and Ovechkin spent years cultivating their relationship and perfecting this watch, and it shows!

How did you know you wanted to work with Hublot?

For a long time, Hublot has been my favorite luxury watch brand and I have more than one of their watches I like to wear. I like the design of their watches and how they fit me. I was happy to have a closer relationship in the years before the 2018 FIFA World Cup where I was able to spend time with Ricardo and from there our teams began to work together so I can become part of the Hublot family officially!

Did you know from the beginning of the creative process that you wanted to incorporate your team colors into the piece you created?

For sure, it was important to have red as part of the design so it will stand out. It was also important to represent where I am from—Russia—and we found a fun way to do it on the second hand. Great job by the design team!

What was the most surprising element of the design process?

I wish we could have taken a trip to Switzerland so we can meet in person with the design team at Hublot—my wife was actually born there. Instead, we had to work on long Zoom calls as a group where we could see how different parts of the design would look and I can share my feedback. It was really cool to see all at once on the computer the different things we wanted to try and to learn about all the innovations with materials and parts of what makes Hublot watches special.  It was also interesting to work and create the special box the watch will come with as it was important to have everything look right. I am very happy with the final design and hope we have a chance to do another one in the future.

What has been the most rewarding part of this collaboration?

For a very long time I wanted to have my brand on a watch. I think we did a great job with the Hublot team to make a special piece that tells parts of my story and highlights the unbelievable watches they can make. It is a huge honor for me and my family to have my own watch like other great champions and hope everyone likes it.
