Fleetmac Wood | A Decade of Dreams, Decadence, & Disco
by Sheila Pippin
To mark ten years of Fleetmac Wood this June, the all-Mac remix project will be hosting Dreams, Decadence, & Disco at Catch One in Los Angeles. At 10 PM on Saturday, June 4th, guests can indulge in a creative soundtrack of reimagined and remixed music from Fleetwood Mac.
A decade ago, Fleetmac Wood began as an experiment to bring the mainstream music of Fleetwood Mac to the underground scene including clubs and festivals across the world. Through this project, the creators of Fleetmac Wood have brought a new sense of fantasy and excitement to the words of Stevie Nicks.
Beginning in Los Angeles on June 4th, the tour will continue through the month of June across the U.S. Tickets for the Los Angeles event are available here.
When was the moment that you knew Fleetwood Mac would be the source of this project?
Roxanne Roll: I used to play Fleetwood Mac often in my DJ sets and came up with the idea about 13 years ago, that a whole night in a club of their music would be intoxicating, hedonistic and polarizing. I sat on that idea for a while until the remix element became a clear way to add some creativity to that concept. The first party 10 years ago was a remix deadline for us and other producer friends who contributed to the project. Back in 2012, no one was playing one artist all night and as far as I know, we are the first remix-focused dance party of one artist. It began as a secret society where a love of Fleetwood Mac merged with our passion for dance music. This project was always about the music of Fleetwood Mac (and solo projects)—it really lends itself to the dance floor and in a strange way, we took the mainstream underground and now, of course, Fleetwood Mac is mainstream again in a big way.
Do you remember the first time you heard Fleetwood Mac? How were you introduced?
I was born the year Stevie and Lindsey joined Fleetwood Mac and their music was on high rotation on my parent’s record player. Be careful what you play to your kids aged 0-3, it might alter the course of their lives. I rediscovered them in the late 00’s and have been digging into their vast treasure trove ever since.
How has the project changed the most in the past ten years?
The first party was an experiment in a London basement and really for our own enjoyment. It was never a plan but a slow evolution over time, where we gathered and created more remixes, visuals, production, and bigger audiences until we were traveling far and wide to festivals and clubs around the world. It’s really about the audience being a part of the show and making their own. We are all fans together and it’s the shared passion expressed through outfits, dance, and community. We have converted ravers into Fleetwood Mac fans and Fleetwood Mac fans into ravers. I still feel like the musical possibilities are endless.
How did you enter the underground club and festival scene?
We have both been DJing in that scene for a long time, starting in London. We both put on our own club nights before we met each other. Having a point of difference and offering something unique is a great start if you want to start a night. I think our night has lasted because it’s niche, attracts music lovers and people can tell it comes from a genuine place. A lot of club promoters are all about ‘scaling’ things and our approach is about keeping the night special for the right people.
How would you describe the scene to an outsider?
Our nights are a celebration and a wonderfully mixed crowd, in LA our main dancing muse is a trans-Latinx witch ‘Candido Cornejo’ who embodies the magic of Stevie. Sometimes people bring their parents which is very cool. We want everyone to feel welcome. There’s not a sea of blonde Stevie wigs—it’s more about Stevie being a state of mind, bringing out your own mystical, fabulousness.
What can we expect from this tour?
We love a theme and for our 10 year celebration we’re diving into Dreams, Decadence and Disco. There’s a few new remix surprises like a remix of Big Love mixed with Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill”. Lindsey Buckingham was inspired by Kate’s track when producing Tango In The Night and seemed like the perfect moment to combine Bush and Buckingham forces.
