Cartier | Bernie Krause's 'The Great Animal Orchestra' in Salem Massachusetts

by Madeleine Schulz

Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain and the Peabody Essex Museum (PEM) are currently showing The Great Animal Orchestra, a multi-sensory immersive exhibition by Bernie Krause and United Visual Artists in Salem, Massachusetts. The exhibition compiles over 5,000 hours of Krause’s recordings of natural environments taken over almost fifty years. Through these, he calls attention to both the richness of the planet’s biodiversity and its state of fast decline.

This exhibition marks Fondation Cartier’s first partnership in the United States in over twenty years, and reflects PEM’s commitment to contemporary art which accentuates deep human connection with the natural world. The opening is accompanied by French filmmaker Vincent Tricon’s new documentary about Krause, produced by Fondation Cartier, to complement the audio-visual experience cultivated by the artist.

The exhibition is on show at the PEM until May 22, 2022.
