Ioanna Gika | “Out of Focus”

After “Roseate” was released at the end of 2018, Ioanna Gika provided a glimpse into the blueprint for the baroque new-age rave she had been conjuring. Now she returns with the video for the latest track “Out of Focus.” In the surreal postmodernistic clip we see the ethereal Gika perform the track in slowmotion draped in flowing Olivier Theyskens gowns. The videos imagery of crisp blue tones is a high contrast to the haze and commanding sounds of the track. Her performance is further subverted by her costar surf champion Jake Caster, presented as Greek god Pan, gliding in a man-made indoor wave pool. A struggle and dance with a few demi gods outside a green house exterior in the snow and as well as a moment in front of a brutalist building feels like a procession somewhere between Drawing Restraint and Holy Mountain.
