Fischer Cherry Explores Selfie Culture | Garis & Hahn
by Agathe Pinard
Between Ou Ears is the new solo exhibition of Fischer Cherry. The artist, who was initially working for Dave Lachapelle and in fashion, switched to fine arts in 2014 focusing on painting and sculpting. This exhibition brings together pieces from two series, Between Our Ears and Eager Apparitions, to address how selfie culture reflects and perpetuates the universality of the male gaze. In an age where gender and intersectional politics are in the public consciousness, Cherry’s paintings and sculptures challenge viewers to rethink the limitations of social consciousness and susceptibility to age-old struggles.
The “mirrored” surfaces of the works allow the viewer to watch themselves over the subjects’ shoulders, accidentally inviting themselves to be a part of the image. The viewer is not immune from the self-objectification of the selfie; no one is, not even the most aware influencer.
The exhibition, Between Our Ears, opened at Garis & Hahn on September 8 and is on view through October 20, 2018.
